What a 3D product view actually costs

Render budgets, load times and the point at which a spinnable object stops paying for itself. Six months of ItsMySpin data, with the awkward numbers left in.

CommercePerformance

A 360° view of a product converts better than a photograph of it. That is true often enough to be worth saying, and false often enough to be worth qualifying.

Where it pays

Objects people want to inspect: furniture, footwear, instruments, anything with a back that matters as much as its front. For those, a spinnable view earns its weight in a way no gallery of stills does.

Where it does not

Flat goods, low-value repeat purchases, and anything where the buyer already knows exactly what the object looks like. A 3D viewer on a pack of batteries is a slower page, not a better one.

The number that decides it

Weight against attention. If the viewer takes longer to become interactive than a visitor is prepared to wait, it does not matter how good the model is — they have already scrolled past it. We hold ourselves to a budget per view and refuse models that miss it, which sometimes means telling a client their asset needs rebuilding before we will ship it.

What we changed

  • Models stream progressively, so the first frame is a usable still.
  • Nothing 3D loads until it is close to the viewport.
  • Every catalogue gets measured before and after, not just after.

The last one is the point. Plenty of teams ship a 3D viewer and report the conversion figure afterwards, with nothing to compare it against.
